  1. Hey guys. I'm posting to state that I will be the interviewer for our project. I'll get questions based on human trafficking

  2. Going to get started on some research I can add to the powerpoint this week. Trying to figure what the best structure would be to go along with the interview. If you guys find anything interesting to add let me know. Also Dean can we discuss possibly using the WFBN mic for the interviews we will be doing in school?

    1. Hey Dave, here's the order of the questions so you can fix the powerpoint in order.

      1. How much do you generally purchase a slave from a middle man for?
      2. What do you charge for resale?
      3. What about tourist girls? Used girls? Are they priced differently?
      4. Are you paying off local law enforcement? If so, how much do you pay them?
      5. Aside from sexual purposes, what else do you use the girls for?

These questions will deal with financing.

      6. How do you lure the girls away from home?
      7. How has the social structure in India and gender roles contributed to the epidemic?
      8. What social and political conditions lead to increased trafficking?
      9. Do you prey on the vulnerable and uneducated?
      10. What about the poor? Do you find that the poorer areas yield you more girls?
      11. Has the population growth of the country contributed to the epidemic? Since no one knows each other, does the anonymity make people not care?
      12. Why has the age of a slave dropped so much recently?
      13. India, like China, uses a system where there are selective abortions, killing baby girls. How do you feel this has affected your business?
      14. As more men move into big Indian cities looking for work, do you feel this has opened up the market?

If you could email the slides when i'm done at my email, d.berato@aol.com, that would be great.

  3. Hey guys, I'm also going to get started on the research this week, I'm going to focus on researching the facts for inbetween the interview, kind of like what Diane Sawyer did in the interview with Bruce Jenner. Dave as the week goes on we can discuss on how to include the information on the powerpoint.

  4. Hey guys I'm going to be the character that is being interviewed. Also I am going to be researching why people get into crime and human trafficking. Research will include what lures people into getting money through illegal ways.

    1. Chris, this is an excellent first hand article of a person who went in undercover to a human trafficking agency. There are definitely some questions I could ask you from it:
      1. How much do you generally purchase a slave from a middle man for?
      2. What do you charge for resale?
      3. Aside from sexual purposes, what else do you use the girls for?

You can check the facts here.

      1. Why has the age of a slave dropped so much recently?
      2. Do you prey on the vulnerable and uneducated?
      3. What about the poor? Do you find that the poorer areas yield you more girls?
      4. What social and political conditions lead to increased trafficking?
      5. Has the population growth of the country contributed to the epidemic? Since no one knows each other, does the anonymity make people not care?
      6. How has the social structure in India and gender roles contributed to the epidemic.
      7. What about tourist girls? Used girls? Are they priced differently?
      8. Are you paying off local law enforcement? If so, how much do you pay them?

  7. Found 2 articles that can be useful for us. They are both specifically about India. One about the economics behind the sex trafficking in India with a chart that is pretty precise. Might be able to use that in the powerpoint. http://www.asianphilanthropyforum.org/cruel-economics-human-trafficking-india/

The second was written back in 2013 by the New York Times. Gives a quick overview of the situation that India is dealing with. (It was in the Editorial Section so there is no author in the citation. -- For Mrs. F ) http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/16/opinion/sex-trafficking-in-india.html?_r=0

  8. Hey guys just realized we never actually started our idea off. I believe we all agreed on doing an interview similar to "60 Seconds". The interview can be between a random reporter (which we decieded to be Dean) and one of the bad guys in the book (which Chris offered to do). Any ideas how the power point can be applied to this topic?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Definitely need to start looking into how to apply the PowerPoint during the interview. Cucuzza can we start on doing some of the in school interviews tomorrow. Let's brainstorm on some questions that we can ask to underclass men regarding the topic.

  10. I think a good way to use the powerpoint is we start off with true facts about human trafficking that introduce a segment of questions and we keep doing that until our interview is finished. I also think that we should hand out the surveys at the beijg and collect them in the 1st 5 minutes and then one of us during the presentation figures put the stats.

    1. Yo Chris, another question for your survey.

Who is the most commonly reported seller of women in India?

      (A) Parents
      (B) Thieves
      (C) Police/State Officials

The correct answer is A, as reported here.

    2. Dean, I like this question alot because this is something new that I feel we haven't really talked about, I would have never thought that the most commonly reported seller is parents, i think that this question will definitely be added to survey because this is a question that everyone will get wrong and then become surprised when they realize the answer.

  11. Yeah I agree with using the PowerPoint as a introduction with facts about the topic. Then we can start the interview after that. Cucuzza lets start working on the videos tomorrow maybe. Also have to start to write up the surveys to be passed out in class. Crocitto I agree. If we collect the surveys early I can add them to the end of the presentation during class.

    1. Sorry Dave saw this a bit late, lets start the interview stuff tomorrow? I can record. I'm slowly piecing together the audience segment with questions to ask the interviewee, and the survey for the class interaction. I'm just afraid that those few questions on the survey may not be a sufficient amount of class interaction. Do any of you guys have any other ideas for class interaction but still keep the interview/ talk show theme alive?

  13. I found an article about frequently asked questions that seems good for me to use for either the audience segment or the class survey. I was thinking of making small multiple choice questions for the class to answer that will draw their attention to the facts of human sex trafficking.
    Ex.
How much money annually does the Human Sex Traffciking industry make a year?
    (a) $40 million
    (b) $500,000
    (c) $32 billion

    The answer is c.

    1. that's a great question. I found another good one for the survey,
What is the average price an Indian woman or child (called a dalit) is sold for?
      (A) $568
      (B) $17
      (C) $2500

      the correct answer is B.

      1) 27
      2) 5
      3) 50
      4) 42

The answer is 50. All 50 states had a report of human traficking even Washington D.C.

I think this may be good for toward the end of the PowerPoint, just to show that we are surrounded by this everyday even though we don't think about it.

    1. Dave, looking at this article these are perfect facts to use in the powerpoint. I like the idea of including trafficking because not just sex trafficking , I also like how it gives you the statistics for each year, these are good to say in the yaer 2015 1,345 cases of human trafficking have been report and then start the interview with questions about just human trafficking and then the next statistic can be about sex trafficking and then a set of questions on sex trafficking.

    1. Hey I feel like we keep talking about human traficking and the criminals but I feel like we haven't even mentioned the cops , the cops in India are almost all "blind" and by that I mean they cooperate with the criminals and revive pay and most don't crack down on the human traficking, here's a video on it : http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/police-inaction-human-trafficking-india/

Berato and Portelli you should take a look at this, it'd help you guys best for the interview part. Dean it can give you an idea of what to ask and Chris you can gather the info to formulate responses and such. Also Crocitto it maybe best to throw some of this information into the powerpoint to give a visual of both sides.

    1. I like bringing the idea of why people get into crime, Dave this would be a good way to begin a the power point and start the interview off by asking the trafficker why he began and also a good question to ask on the survey. Chris can you post the citation for this because I want to include this on the works cited page.

  23. So instead of the interview, that we couldnt really fully make, it probably be best to use the video that Portelli supplied us with in place of that. Its perfect, it shows that even though Slum Dog Millionaire is a movie, the actors understand the seriousness of the situation they are filming about and are fighting against it. Its a great way to inform the class and relate it to something many people have seen.

Maybe just like 5-10 questions to ask, I think without it our presentation won't be interesting, like Mrs Fotinatos said, it can't just be us standing in front of the class giving a speech.
