  1. Topic:
Okay so we have agreed on looking into "The Analects" about how the gentleman is a slave to society. The only problem is we don't have a clear approach about how we want to approach the topic. This might be the only issue on this though because finding research shouldn't be an issue.

One way I was thinking to approach was to turn into a class debate where we first introduce what each of us individually think about it. And then we try to get the opinions of other classmates in the room.

Another way is to do an interview where each one of us gives a scripted Q & A, and it explains how the answers relate to the research. But I want different ideas besides these two. So let's see if we can brainstorm a couple wacky ideas out of nowhere.

    2. A small update on this. We have decided on who will research what about "The Gentleman". This will be done in chronological order, some will be researching the gentlemen in Ancient times. Some will be researching it in modern times and then one will be tasked with researching in between and in miscellaneuos.

Modern Times "Gentlemen" researchers: Adem Liharevic, Khalil Wood

  2. Part one of the Research for the “Gentleman” in Ancient Times:

We see that the gentleman plays a major role in much of ancient times. In the Analects, we see that the gentleman is a point that men were expected to reach. Confucius gave a guideline as to what a gentleman should and shouldn’t do.
He describes the gentleman in great detail as someone with great responsibility to both his family and the community around him.

The link below is the section concerning the gentleman certain traits they have and goes into more detail about the gentleman of ancient times:

  3. Based on the research that I have gathered so far, maybe it would be best if we did our presentation as a panel discussion. Pretty much what we could do is present the gentleman in the ways we found him throughout the times we selected, then open up discussion to the class as an entirety to get their input on their view. Let me know what you guys think about this

    1. Remember John we only have one piece of info so far and we haven't really gotten our hands dirty. The only way we can really get it to work is if the info of different cites start to conflict. And ONLY if they conflict can they really start to give the opportunity for debate. However if such an opportunity arises, I'll gladly jump to the panel discussion idea.

      Delete
    2. John, I would be cautious about opening up the discussion to the class. As you saw today, when that happens, you lose a measure of control over what people say or where the presentation goes.

    3. Ok so we finally have all the research we need to decide what we want to do. So here's what I have decided to be the best approach.

First we introduce the thesis. Then I discuss everything about the gentlemen. The presentation will then enter into something to that of a talk show where I invite guests (All four of you) and I interview you and ask questions about aspects of the gentlemen. After all the interviewing is done I introduce a completely different topic about what a slave does and then I relate it to how a gentleman is a slave to society. And that's pretty much it, I don't think there is much opportunity in opening any of these topics to the class from what I am seeing. And the group that tried to turn it into a panel discussion backfired badly, so I think its best to leave it away from involving the class.

      Delete
    4. That generally, from what we have seen is probably the best course of action. We would be fighting just to get their attention, let alone try and show them our view on the topic we are going to present. Though generally we'll have to find ways to showcase our presentation that will be interesting enough, this seems like that it will benefit us better than anything else.

  4. I decided ti first gather information about what the slave does. And from this cite I found how a slave does fit the idea of a gentleman. The slave must work/toil for others and be completely selfless. The gentleman does the same on that he must use his energy to help other ONLY and if he has any free time it must be put to studies. A slave could be permitted to study if the master allows it but both have one thing in common for sure. They must do selfless work for others

  5. This the second part of my research on the Gentleman in Ancient Times:
This next article brings up an interesting point. It shows us that the whole concept of the gentleman was something that was worshipped by others. At that same point, anyone who didn't conform to some sort of gentleman status were considered barbaric.

    1. And just one more point that I wanted to add on to this is the effect of the gentleman. In a way, it divided the society they lived in, in a way making each group enslaved to their own caste. It was split between the intellectual gentleman and the men who do physical labor, giving us some idea of what status and regard they hold their beliefs in. Just an after thought I had on this research.

  7. Part one of my research for the “Gentleman” in Modern Times:

From the information that I've gathered, the modern gentleman is a man who is disciplined and strives to seek out his flaws in order to improve himself physically, mentally, and spiritually. He strives to become the most well-rounded, adaptable person that he can possibly be. When he sets his mind to it, he can be adept at whatever he does and wants to do. The gentleman is ambitious, and does what he must in order to accomplish his goals. He is an individual that is able to care for himself and deal with any situation that comes his way with ease. He has the qualities of being strong and confident, of being generous and forgiving to those around him.

    2. Well chad, while the gentleman has evolved from ancient times, much of what he stands for stays the same. However, as times change, people respond and view the gentleman differently and so what makes him stays different while what he is supposed to be remains the same.

  8. This is part 2 of my research for the “Gentleman” in Modern Times:

The modern gentleman is also a sensationalized paradox imagined by many women who have described what they feel is the ideal man. He knows how to groom himself and yet is rugged. He knows how to gain the favor of women with respect and at the same time is assertive. He travels alone, yet is a loyal companion to have by your side. He is financially stable, yet has enough time on his hands to improve his abilities. He is a reserved individual, yet can begin a conversation and goes above and beyond to get to know others, especially women who pique his interest.

  9. For my second cite I decided to help in looking to the other habits of a gentleman. In my findings I found that self-cultivation and rituals are other important things to keep in mind. From this it can be concluded that the gentleman did in fact do more than just help others. This practice of self-cultivation and ritual are for self-improvement which is done during whatever free time he has.

    1. This is a good article you found Khalil. I think we should stress how technology has changed what defines the modern gentleman. As communication has changed from the early 20th century, the way people interact has also changed. As texting has become a part of our society, people do less interacting face to face then they used to.

      Delete
    2. I think we should also use the idea that the expectations that people have of the mdoern gentleman. As all people are different in what they feel makes the modern gentleman and the characteristics that they have. This shows that people see the modern gentleman in different lights, for example, if he is willing to help you without question when you most need it or whether or not he is loyal to everyone.

    3. Through both technology and the expectations that others have of the modern gentleman. It is very hard for him to exist, as how we deal with others has changed. Also, it is near impossible to fit the expectations of others as we are all unique in our personality and what we see as being a gentleman towards others.

    1. I believe we can also use this to tell why it is difficult for the modern gentleman to exist in our society. The business world is filled with tough and even nasty people mainly because people that are respectful and kind are taken advantage of. People take kindness for weakness as bosses that bend the rules in response to their employees failure shows that the boss doesn't want to address his employee's irresponsibility towards his work

    2. If bosses or high executives of a company weren't strict in the standards that their employees should have, no one would be afraid to do things that would be disastrous to the whole company.

  14. After watching all three groups so far in doing their presentations they all have one thing in common. They didn't really open it up to the class. Actually one class tried to but it backfired terribly. But I feel that the problem is that its just not possible to open up our research or our thesis to the class because of several things.

    1) They simply just don't understand it: Whose the one that did the research? The group that presented the material to the entire class. But its not just that but its just that a lot of these topics just really don't interest people. When was the last time you questioned your existence whether it was evolution or creationism. When was the last time you thought about stereotype in the west being related ideals in the east or when did you care about this specific battle other than the fact that it was on a test? Certainly none of these criteria fit anything that I questioned myself about.

    2) Not many ways to open it up to the class: The group that presented that tried to open up to the class did it via survey. They then asked very specific questions to the people. It all backfired when everybody started shooting questions back at them and they provided answers with little context which showed that the group didn't really look deeper in for a better understanding. other than this there is panel discussion but it goes back to the issue of getting people interested. Several people fell asleep in the first two presentations (Not gonna mention any names).

    3) The end of the school year: This is very obvious so I'm not gonna go into further detail simply because I feel that the reason speaks for itself.

So after going into these reasons I'm finding it increasingly difficult to find a way to get the class involved and I'd really prefer to play this safe. So after much decision making, I feel its best to just not open discussion up to the class because it seems extremely volatile and you risk losing control of the discussion especially with some of the...personalities in this class....

    1. Yeah i can see the angle you're approaching from. Depending on what type of questions or the way open the discussion the presentation can take a turn for the worse. The students in the class can almost make u look unprepared and naive. This is definitely a point that we shall discuss as a group and come to a final decision on.

      Delete
    2. I can see what you mean by that, based on the fact that while one group tried to keep the class engaged, it didn't really work and was more of an inhibitor if anything else. The other group that went today definitely did an excellent job by keeping the class attention with some jokes and profane statements and showing the information in ways that would keep it engaging. Probably the best thing we can do with this is just simply try to do something similarly to keep the class attention, but not let them interfere with the flow of the lesson.

    3. Also after looking at all our different research, I'm honestly not sure how it fits our main topic . I think we should may be reconsider altering our main thesis just a little. The reason why is because our research is coming from all different types of all angles. We have 1) how in modern times being a gentleman can actually become a problem and that a gentleman can't exist, 2)how a gentleman paved the way of ancient times, 3)We have what a gentleman is in modern times and also we have what he was in ancient times as well. We have other research as well. I have absolutely no problem with the topic but In my view the research isn't fitting the thesis. Tell me what u guys think . If you feel I'm wrong or if i am interpreting the thesis please tell me.

    4. I have been having trouble with this issue as well. It was already hard to find the research on this topic because Google Scholar has had so much trouble just finding things like gentleman and slave linking together. Which is why it seems better to alter our thesis to one of Khalil's options entirely. I'm opting with the first option (1) how in modern times being a gentleman can actually become a problem and that a gentleman can't exist) because we have plenty of info on what the Ancient Gentleman is like and we have info on what a Modern Gentleman is like. Then using Khalil's research we can discuss why being a Gentleman doesn't work in Modern times. The only issue is the fact that we are using different cultures. For Ancient times we have eastern Chinese culture. And for modern we have Western culture, I'm hoping Fotinatos doesn't put us down on this issue. She may shoot us down for because of a culture issue but then again this is similar to Caldiero's group's thesis only it doesn't really put emphasis on culture.

    5. Hi Guys, one way to involve the class would be to take a poll or give a survey at the beginning to gauge misconceptions. Anything you can ask in a multiple choice format?

      Delete
    6. No, not really...not only do we not only have ideas on a survey but I just feel that the ideas can't force misconceptions. Not only but If i recall correctly the first group did a optional survey and tried to get the group interested through that and it failed...miserably because the class took the topic out of context or rather the group met conflicting issues that showed that they really didn't go deep into their research. I would also add because they then read the survey's out loud when the survey was supposed to be private and they called out on the only person that said no. I felt it was an unprofessional attempt to get the group involved. And that's why I don't want to take such a risk in getting the class involved like that because this is meant to teach people something in non lecture-way. But I think the issue is simply that this can't really be taught in a non-lecture way because were spewing out facts and facts can't really be bended to give a more creative way to show it. Yes, you can change a few words to make it sound fancy but still stays and retains the same meaning.

I feel that the reason the group that presented today did really good because not only did they keep us entertained but they followed a more informative way to teach which was basically a direct lecture through role-playing as experts. On top of that I just don't feel that you can get the class involved in topics like this, especially with historical facts because a fact is set in stone, like group that presented today who provided factual information on what Sun Tzu taught.

The group before that while they gave the most creative way to show it so far they also didn't get the group involved because they role-played as personalities or role-models of ancient culture to show how they don't work in western culture. I didn't feel there was any way to really get people involved in it even with a survey because they role-played as ideal people that were in-fact ideal in ancient culture according to philosophers, books, and the bible. Giving a survey about it would be meaningless because I really don't know what kind of multiple choice questions could be put on there honestly and I feel as though that the class would try to go against the fact which would change the topic entirely.

Finally i just want to add another bit of info about the first group: While it was unprofessional of them to read the survey out loud I think that its better to give the survey out after the thesis is given just like they did. So that way they get an idea what we tried to approach our research.

Finally I really don't want to make another major thesis change that alters our research entirely just to reach a way to make sure the class gets to participate. Such an idea to me is catastrophic and would make all of our research invalidated outright. And also as I said before we have some "interesting" personalities in our class as you are aware at this point (Once again I'm not going to mention any names).

      Delete
    7. One way that I was thinking that we can involve the class would be to ask them some questions prior to starting the presentation like Labeat did today such as what is to be the gentleman or gentleman-like qualities. That would get them to start thinking and bring the class into the discussion early on.

      Delete
    8. I agree with you John something at the beginning would be good. Whether it's questions or some type of poll/vote

      Delete
  15. Yeah i agree with both of you guys. A survey in the VERY beginning could work. Like today we saw with the group that presented today. They ask our opinion even before they presented. So Therefore their wouldn't be any misconceptions. But also we have to make sure we can cover the possibilities of unorthodox responses.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Also guys will we be playing a character. Because it seems like a majority of the groups were actually playing a character. This is just a question to ponder about. We don't have to but i was just wondering. It would be an interesting idea.

    2. It seems like it would be a good thing to add more creativity. This would be that extra something we could need on top of the research we find that could help make the presentation more interesting. Though I think we should just keep our names, just to avoid any confusion.

  19. Ok so just a quick run down of everything:

    Gerard-show host
Adem and Khalil-experts on modern gentleman
John and Chad- experts on ancient gentleman

Gerard starts off with his introduction about the gentleman and questions everyone with their thoughts on the gentleman. He introduces everyone to the audience and we jump straight into the questions. We start with the experts on ancient and answer those questions. The host then talks about was discussed previously and transition into the modern questions. The host asks the modern experts the questions he has prepared. Then the entire group talks about how the gentleman can be taken advantage of. Finally we do the conclusion and final remarks.
