  4. So guys I’ve been thinking about how we could perform this motivational speech. I think Dave would be the best at being the speaker that’s trying to teach everyone what they need to do in order to be successful. Three of us could be his examples of how Sun Tzu’s ideas work in different aspects of life (sports, business, social, etc. ). One of us for example, Jake, could be part of the audience that Dave directly talks to and brings up in front of the class. He would then ask Jake some questions and show him exactly what he needs to do in order to be successful.

  5. Carl I agree with your idea about how we should perform the motivational speech. To make it more specific, I was thinking that Dave and I would be the speakers and we would be interviewing Carl. I was thinking that Jake can be a successful businessman who Dave and I can call upon to further our explanation on how a person can become successful in business (since he is researching business. As for Steve the same idea, but he could be a successful coach (since he is researching about sports). And for the social effects, Dave and I could talk about that.

    1. This is a good idea festa, to add on I could say we should watch motivational videos, dress the part, and act with extremely energetic personalities. We could really pull off a motivational speech, but not just me and you but with all of us taking turn's as in a group to motivate carl. Each of us in a specific field as you said we have to have high energy, like for instance I can come in ask Carl "What is Success" and then slam (light put the book on the desk) The Art of War on the desk and say this Carl this is success..

  6. Also, while reading through Art of War, I stumbled across a great quote that we can use to support our idea that deception is necessary for success. Sun Tzu states, "All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when we are able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must appear inactive, when we are near we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near." This quote exemplifies one of Sun Tzu's essential teachings which is deception. We can relate this to business because a person must be able to deceive to climb the corporate ladder and please their boss. We can relate this to sports because in every professional sport, a team must use trickery to gain the upper hand and win the game. In social relationships, one must be able to lie to achieve popularity, friends, and upper status.

    1. Festa, I whole-heartedly agree with you. Deception is a huge factor in being successful in many practices. In this article I found by Leanne Hoagland-Smith, she talks about how deception is a big part in business. She gives three specific tips in order to successfully use deception to your advantage:
      1. “Successful deception requires time. There must be time scheduled to undertake this behavior.”
      2. “Successful deception requires research not only on the competitors, but current and future business trends.”
      3. “Successful deception requires thinking differently. After you gather your research, you must think differently about what you are reading and seeing.”
She then goes on to say that deception is a necessary business strategy and that it will help one’s business improve in growth and innovation.

  7. I found in the Art of War, the five dangerous faults which may affect a general:
    1. Recklessness, which leads to destruction
    2. Cowardice, which leads to capture
    3. A hasty temper, which can be provoked by insults
    4. A delicacy of honor which is sensitive to shame
    5. Over-solicitude for his men, which exposes him to worry and trouble
This can easily be related to business and sports by how a coach or a CEO should avoid acting. By not following these five traits, one is not doomed for failure, and therefore success is that much easier.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Carlos those five faults are awesome what not to do's as a leader/general. Recklessness is a terrible trait because a leader should not let his power take over his mind. Cowardice just leads to an unreliable leader who probably depends on other people. A hasty temper shows weakness in mind verbally and physically. A delicacy of honor shows that a leader has no pride in what he or she does. Lastly, over-solicitude portrays that the leader has no control over the emotions that bother oneself. We should keep all five of these traits in mind when talking about a leader/general. Good job Carlos!

  8. I completely agree Carl. I have also found a Sun Tzu quote that can be related to Business. “Know the enemy and know yourself; in a hundred battles you will never be in peril” You can use foreknowledge & deception to maximize the power of business intelligence. By knowing your competitors you can formulate plans and strategies to successfully compete with them. And by knowing yourself you understand that you must mask your strategies so your plan works.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Jake that is a great quote by Sun Tzu. The way you relate knowing the competitors goes in correlation to the idea of a sports team. Usually the coach will always encourage the team to do their best against anyone but they should know the opponents' weaknesses. Besides knowing your opponent, one should understand his or her mistakes. This is essential for sports because not anyone is perfect.

  9. I have found another quote related to Business."When one treats people with benevolence, justice and righteousness, and reposes confidence in them, the army will be united in mind and all will be happy to serve their leaders.” Sun Tzu. You want to develop your character as a leader to maximize the potential of your employees. It is leaders with character that get the most out of their employees

    1. Jake brought up another good quote about a leader. It can also relate to the sports world that involves the team and their coaches. When a coach treats his or her team with respect, integrity, and motivation then as Jake said, the team will happily serve their coach. It almost can be seen as a domino effect because if one person is happy at the moment, it will grow on to others on the team. But initially, it is the coach who will have this effect because the team looks up to the coach for guidance and assistance.

      Delete
    2. So i think this can be related to my point of the social benefits of Sun Tzu's teachings. All of us have witnessed what its like to deal with someone who treats you terrible or without respect. When someone treats you horribly you immediately lose respect for them, you begin to dislike them, you disregard what they say to you, and you wont look to help them in times of need. Therefore, this affects social relationships because advancing socially is all about building friendships, becoming confident in yourself, and working together. Not to rip off the golden rule but its pretty appropriate, treat others with respect and they will treat you with respect. Essentially, being a decent person to others is a key aspect of humanities social nature. In order to face the benefit's of cooperation we need other's help, to gain their help we must treat them with dignity as we would our self.

  10. In the Art of War, Sun Tzu talks about maintaining good morale. This can easily be related to all three of our main practices/topics. In the sports area, good morale is key to a good team. If the team is happy then everyone will do well and succeed. Likewise in the business field, if the employees have good morale then they will work harder and not complain. Lastly, social/psychological, if one has good morale in himself, life will be less stressful and this kind of feeling will pass on to others.

    1. I agree with you, Pabua. Good morale is very important in achieving success in all of these fields. In this article by Nelson, he explains that good morale is critical in the business world. The boss of a company relies on his employees and their abilities, so he needs them to be at their very best when working. The only way he will have success is if his employees have good morale and work to their potential.

The idea of using deception to get ahead of your competitors is one of our many ideas and with this information you will be able to expand on that idea. Also, the idea of building up your character, to maximize the potential of your employees. This coincides with our idea of good morale and treating your employees with respect so that they respect you and want to work for you.

  12. So I found this article http://tinybuddha.com/blog/stop-waiting-to-live-scare-yourself-alive/ its actually pretty interesting and relates to the social aspect of our topic. "Cowardice, which leads to capture" can be interpreted as unwillingness to commit to new things which are perceived as dangerous and unnecessary. Caroline whom is an educated and self proclaimed author, advocates an more carefree lifestyle one in which we are less concerned with the little dilemmas in our lives which cloud our head, and more concerned with actually living life. Specifically you have to take chances that you would normally never consider possible. You must not think of all the negative's that can happen, but of the benefits you can incur from said experience. Lastly, you must be willing to face new risks, to allow yourself to conquer said risk's and then move onto the next...because really life is all about winning even the smallest battles everyday all the time

    1. Dave, cowardice can easily be related to all of our aspects. It can be seen especially well in sports because sports players need to take risks and be courageous when playing. They need to do what it takes to win even if their chances aren’t very good. In a business aspect, industries need to take chances to increase their profits. If a business never takes any risks, they will never get anywhere. They’ll never grow, and they’ll eventually die out. In a social/psychological aspect, people need to be courageous; they also will never get anywhere in life without taking risks, even if they’re small risks. People need to learn how to step out of their comfort-zone and live life and enjoy it.

    1. I definitely agree with this on the whole business aspect, in terms of finding a job or being ambitious enough to get promoted this can be really helpful. When you apply for a job or attempt to get promoted, you have to commit your entire being to execution, you cant just sit back and hope you get the job or advancement. You must work hard in getting a job through a decent resume, a good interview, and constant check ups or increased interest in attaining said position within a workplace. More so, in trying to advance your position at a job you will work non stop to impress your boss usually by putting in extra hours, doing thing's you normally wouldn't do, or simply working hard and efficiently. Overall this point makes a lot of sense in the business world and it would be great for you to expand on this during our motivational speech Jake.

  14. So i found another interesting article which pertains to my subject of the aspects of Sun Tzu's teachings and how they can help you socially.
"Getting Past Anger." Getting Past Anger. Parlay International, 1993. Web. 05 May 2015.
This article essentially states that anger will negatively affect you socially in various ways, it also describes how to actively control your anger and ultimately live a more calm life. To begin Anger affects you socially for the worst as it destroys your sense of reason and may lead to you hurting loved ones around you emotionally, often those that may have nothing to do with your anger issues. Moreover, denial of anger could lead to low self esteem, destruction of friendships or potential friendships, and general loneliness. All of which can adversely affect your social nature in a bad sense. Furthermore, the article describes methods in which to control your anger by admitting you have anger problems, venting about your problems in a non negative way, confronting the root cause of your anger, be constructive and confident, and shy away from depressant drugs and alcohol which will not help your anger problems in the long run.

    1. Dave, this is a very interesting article that will be beneficial in our motivational speech. To be successful, a person must be able to control their anger. One of Sun Tzu's dangerous faults is: "A hasty temper, which can be provoked by insults". To be socially accepted, a person cannot have a hasty temper because that will drive away friends and provoke insults. During the motivational speech, maybe you can bring up an example of someone you knew who had great skills and knowledge but embodied one of Sun Tzu's dangerous faults such as a hasty temper. And how this fault ultimately lead to their downfall.

    2. I think this also could be related to business. Anger is business is something that could easily happen. But it's something you musn't show. Lot's of Business depends on relationships with co-workers and clients. Keeping a cool and being polite and respectful in all aspects of the Business world is a must.

  15. Jake, I found a piece of research that relates Sun Tzu's idea of strategy to the business world. In this article, David Brim, the author, brings up the seven powerful lessons that Sun Tzu can teach you about strategy and how it can make you a success in the business field. One main point, is the use of strategy in marketing. A business must know how, where, and who to market their product to. This is where Sun Tzu's ideas of strategy come into place. To be successful in business, you need to have a strategy.

    1. That is a great piece of research. It gave me a lot of knowledge about the integration of sun tzu in the marketing industry. The points David Brim brings up are great. I specifically liked the third one. “The natural formation of the country is the soldier’s best ally”
In this particular quote Sun Tzu is referencing the terrain, or landscape that one faces in battle. It is important for us to remember to become very accustomed to the landscape of our industry. We must also be aware of changes that occur in our industry that could impact our business

  16. Guys, I found another piece of research that shows how Sun Tzu teachings can lead to modern success in general. We can also use this to further our point how Sun Tzu's ideas relate to business, sports, and social relationships. In the article, Eric Barker, the author, keeps referring to one of Sun Tzu's famous quotes: "Knowledge is Power". Now this is a very broad quote but if you continue reading, it is really quite ingenious about how we can relate it to the modern world. In the article, Barker brings up the example of going into a job interview. Before the interview, research the company, CEO, and the goals they have for the future. The more knowledge you have, the more likelihood you will get the job. We must remember that knowledge is power and with power comes success!

    1. I completely agree Festa. Knowledge in general is power, but it can be used many ways to achieve success. In the Business aspect knowledge should be used to also research and know not only yourself but your competitors. Knowing about your competitors and how they approach you and their product can help you counter them. Knowledge of your own products and company is also vital so you can reach your clients and market successfully. Making your product more known and desirable then any others.

    2. I can totally relate this to the social aspect of Sun Tzu's teachings. So i don't want to sound like a creep or anything but really knowing things about somebody can definitely help you build lasting friendships or relationships with others. It may be weird but say for instance your on a date or you just met somebody else for the first time and you literally know nothing about the other person, besides starting random conversations that could be hit or miss, going in with information about said persons likes/dislikes or interests could potentially launch a lasting relationship. This doesn't mean stalking your date/friend, but taking to time to know them or actually listening to what their into. Taking the time to accumulate even the smallest amount of information about others can lead to social development and happiness.

    1. This is good idea, we don't want to overwhelm the audience with boring information or statistics. Lets make this simple and just put up points that we can reference and really elaborate on throughout the speech. To add on to this though, we should add some inspirational music or even pictures that could really enhance the presentation and keep everyone in the class awake for the whole speech. Also lets not just put up quotes and move on, we have to use these quotes as a sort of inspiration for everyone including our audience(carl). Lets develop how the quotes relate to each subject with each of our points intertwining with said quotes.

If a coach treats his players well, they will be happier and try harder. If one treats his staff respectably, his industry will strengthen. I could even see this applying to social/psychological. If you treat others well, life will be more pleasant because those same people will treat you well. This quote goes very well with the idea of good morale leads to success.

    3. So I discovered a great piece of information from this website I found. Besides the information having to do with my topic, it can relate to Jake's business and Dave's social/psychological aspects. This website states that, "leadership is a complex composite of commendable personal attributes and ways of acting that result in employees and student-athletes believing in the leader’s judgment and direction and wanting to execute or fulfill the leader’s assignments and expectations." This piece of info sounds just as similar as the wise words that come from Sun Tzu. More importantly the main idea of this source are the personal attributes of a leader that are presented. Some attributes include:
Passion- "Performs work and play and approaches every task with passion and enthusiasm.
Optimism- "Believes that everyone has something important to contribute to the success of the organization; creates an environment that is positive, hopeful and buoyant.
Selflessness- "Puts the needs, interests and wishes of others before his or her own self interest.

Too much of it will distract the audience as Jake said so we must limit the words on each slide. Quotes are going to be our interpretation to how everyone can carry on the leadership skills that Sun Tzu presented in The Art of War.

  21. I found this article about how military strategies are used in Japanese businesses. This directly corresponds to our topic because they use Sun Tzu’s Art of War. They use the tactics in his novel such as the one’s we are talking about in order to strengthen their businesses and achieve success. They see the business world as a battlefield with their competitors, therefore they need to know and understand their enemy in order to crush them. If one knows his enemies weaknesses, he is able to destroy them and create an empire of his own.

Some ways a leader can boost and have good morale for the team are by setting team goals (it can be any goal as long as it motivates the team and builds excitement), confronting frustrations head on (this means that whatever problems the team/group has with each other person, it is important for the leader to let them speak them out), learning from each other (even the coach/leader can learn from his or her players, employees, and friends), and lastly lead by example (the leader and coach are usually looked up by their players as role models).

  23. Hey guys i somewhat explained this before but i really wanna stress the fact that we need to be like actual motivational speakers in this presentation. What i mean by this we have to act like were marketing a product to our audience(carl) like one of those commercials trying to sell a 19.99 product. We need to have really energetic personalities and should definitely use our hands and motions to energize our audience and the entire classroom. Also i think we should organize the presentation like a essay. Introduction, body, and conclusion, all straight-forward as in the introduction would be us just energizing the audience and marketing our topic. Body would be us taking turns to explain our subjects fluently and with real life relations, answering and asking carl questions about his life or our topics, and stressing the fact that Sun Tzu's book will in fact solve all of your problems. I.E we are marketing the product of the Art of War to our customers through real life applications(using exaggeration and playing on what the audience (carl) believes they need to live a better life). Lastly, our conclusion should sum up everything we discussed plus a clever metaphor or quote that would leave the audience (carl) wanting to buy more and more of our product(the art of war).
