  2. I have thought of a few pieces of information on how it will be easy to organize the information we collect. Since we are looking at how the American Dream has transformed and developed since our country was a fetus. For each time period we should research goals for the time period, average income, usual livelihoods, economy of America, income of poor/middle class/rich, happiness level, new technology, and other ideas that might help cover what the american dream consisted of for the time period.

    1. I think these will be good points of research because all of those goals are going to be different for each time period and also each goal will be viewed differently depending on the time period. There will be different ways to reach these goals depending on what time period we are talking about, and lastly I think the one thing that we can incorporate into our research is the actual definition of the american dream today, and compare it to what is was throughout history to see how much it has changed.

    2. I also think we should look for a suitable video

      Delete
    3. a nice video would definitely compliment our ideas. but if we cannot find one i dont think it is necessary. But it will definitely be appreciated if we could find a good flick.

    4. I also agree with you Troy, different time periods will show the progession or degression of the American Dream. The video James is also a good idea, sometimes a nice informational video will just help get our goal across to our fellow classmates. I think we have a good idea of how we are going to research this and present this to our fellow classmates. By researching different time periods we will definitely be able to see the development and change of the American Dream over the years.

    5. Troy, you have a very well developed orginization plan for presenting our information. However, I agree with James when saying that a video may be needed. One main reason why a video may be beneficial to our presentation is because it will definitely help keep our audience's attention. Also, due to the early time periods that we are researching, it may be hard for us to find reliable information about people of that time's attitudes and viewpoints. A video will make it much easier to show how these people tried to achieve success on an everyday basis.

  3. As I have been researching the time period of present day I stumbled upon a website that covers many topics that cover what people think of the American dream. The information was gathered through surveys in the year of 2014. The analysis shows some very interesting information about the countries view on the American Dream.

    1. Troy we have to come up with name of the colleges and the frats.
Also a logical way to tie them into our time periods and for it to all make sense in portraying the american dream and how it has changed through American history. Let me know what colleges you want to use if there going to be real or fake. The names of the frats as well. Also i was just thinking we can make a survey and at the end ask the class what frat they would join based on how we portray the american dream, or we can just ask them straight up their views on the american dream, let me know what your feeling about this.

      Delete
    2. I think we should keep everything generic and fake just so we dont have to be too specific with colleges and frats. Our college could be called Asturias University. Our frats names should be reflective of what type of american dream the frat is displaying.

    3. okay so im going to research american dream and what it means to americans, also going to research how it changed over time and im going to look over all of the things you said to research in your first post and tie that into my frat and the rest of us should do the same.

      Delete
  4. I think that a good way to present this is as a kid in his first week of college. He wants to join a fraternity. The different types of the american dream will be presented as the clubs or frats the kid has to choose from. The researchers will have to try sell their respective topics (fraternities) to the future FratBoi, we will need to present the upsides of choosing the frat while providing some accurate research.

    1. Troy i like topic because first of most of our classmates will being going away to college and joining fraternities, so it will be entertaining for the class to listen to for 35 minutes. As for comparing each frat to the time periods we discussed in class i think it can be done through research and presentation.

      Delete
    2. I think the frat idea is really good Troy. It is an entertaining way to get the class interested in our presentation. After the kid makes his decison after listening to the frats discuss their ideas we can get the class involved by asking their opinions on the frat the kid chose and what frat they might chose if they needed to pick one.

      Delete
    3. I have to agree with both Steve and James. The frat idea is a good way to get the clas interested in this topic, considering we are all going to college next year we can bring out some good points and opinions on this.

      Delete
  5. I think a good way to get the class involved is to ask them their views on the american dream and what they think it means to achieve that american standard of living. We can do this in a few different ways; we can ask questions and call on people, we can make them fill out a survey or we can make them write out what their opinion of the american dream is.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I think a good way to present the fraternities is to have 3 frat tables set up each of them would be take on the role of a time period that is being researched and we tie in the research and morals of each time period and add put them into the frat for example a frat that is representing the colonial time period will be more simple and basic compared to a frat representing a modern time will be more complex and up to date with our needs and views. Let me know how you guys feel about this.

    1. James this is a good set up but the only thing is, it may be hard to find research on certain time periods especially the older ones just off of the simple fact that specific statistics such as depression and happiness levels werent recorded back then. Present day might be the only time period where we can find some significant data on. So i suggest, if your original ideas of a time period based American Dream research do not pan out because of lack of information, you can choose a different type of American Dream, as there is a different one for everyone in America that has ever lived. There is people whose dream is to make a lot of money for example, and to drive nice cars, and live decadent lifestyles. There is people who are simple people and they can just be happy without having much. So i think researching the American Dream not based off a time period would be easier to sell, from the fraternities perspective, and easier to buy, from the new college boys perspective.

    2. i know im researching what we spoke about, the american dream based off of people having basic needs met and so far ive gotten that an astonishing 75 percent of americans consider the american dream to be having there basic needs met. These thing include a college education, a home, a car, a family and of course money.

    3. also upon research the american dream now is more about the people being happy having time to themselves and having their basic needs met, a study shows that americans who work less hours have an improvement in their quality of life and less stress. Majority of Americans feel it is impossible to achieve the american dream today rather than a decade ago when it was very likely. American say this is due to high cost in education and healthcare. The american dream today has many more obstacles now than it did years ago such as money, jobs, schooling. Many people can not handle this and become stressed that is why most people feel the american dream is lost. In our presentation we have to show why it is not lost and it still alive.

  7. I have an idea on presenting the topic of American dream. We can have a panel of Experts. The panel of experts will be discussing interesting facts and research from there time periods and how maybe one time period may have effected another one. This can get the class involved cause maybe we can have them throw in some questions to ask the experts about the time periods and show the differences in american dream.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Another idea on presenting the topic of american dream is maybe make tv commercials like a youtube video of a commercial. The commercial will be on the different time periods. Each commercial will be only a few minutes long each about the different Dreams. After the commercials are done we can discuss information and provide more details to the class about the american dreams in the time periods.

  9. I found an article of what an author of the 1930s depicting the american dream of that time. What he depicts of the american dream is a land where life should be better for everyone, a place where there is opportunity for everyone it just takes the determination to achieve. He proceeds to discuss what the dream isn't. He says how its not the dream to own motor cars and high wages. The dream is social order in which each man and woman will be given fair equality no matter there social class and that they are judged just on there hard work and determination to succeed.

  10. To help our presentation we can take this depiction of the american from the 1930s and compare to famous speeches or documents. In this authors depiction of the american dream he talks about equality and how every person should have a fair shot no matter if the person is man or women. You can compare this with Martin luther king jr. speech i have a dream which is about equality. You can also compare it to the declaration of independence where it talks about how every person has the right of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, this compares with the author saying it doesn't matter the sex of the person but his right to give it a shot to have determination.

  11. The definition of american dream in the dictionary is the ideals of freedom, equality, and opportunity traditionally held to be available to every American.
a life of personal happiness and material comfort as traditionally sought by individuals in the U.S.. We can use this t interact with the class we can discuss with them their view on that definition if that definition suits their view on the american dream

  12. I found this website that talks about the american dream during the civil rights movement. It discusses how the american dream during the 1950s was to own a house a be sucessful. It also shows the civil rights movemnt and how their dream is different. On the website it showed me how martin luther king jr. stood on the lincoln memorial and told the crowd his famous I have a dream speech where he discusses that the american dream is not able to be fullfilled by certain people because of their race and how they do not have equal opportunities.

  13. It is said that the basic principles of the American Dream were founded in the early 17th century. Back in these days the definition of the American Dream was to be able obtain life, liberty, property and the pursuit of happiness. After World War II the U.S. was looked at as the most prestigious country in the world. This means that people from other countries were probably trying to obtain the American Dream aswell. Over time, it is evident that the definition of the American Dream has drastically changed. Now many people would tell you that the American Dream simply is to get rich. It is ashame that for MANY people money is just about their only concern in life.

  14. A good idea to present the American Dream in different time periods is to pretend as if we have a time machine. As the time progresses from the early 1900's to now, each student to exit the time machine will give their depiction of the American Dream in that certain time period. After each student shares his thoughts about what they think the American Dream is, we can then compare and contrast everyone's thoughts and show how it has developed over time.

  15. Another fun idea for presentation would be to make a game show out of it. We can do this by giving 5 different time periods to our audience of the presentation. Each student in the group can then present his idea of the American Dream and have each member of the audience write down what time period he thinks that student is presenting. At the end of the game whoever comes the closest to matching up the time
    periods with their description wins.

  16. Our presentation will be based off of a generic college. The college is called Asturias University, College of Innovation. The Colleges main theme is for kids to change america by pursuing their version of the American dream. Instead of major fraternities/ sororities, there will be major dream groups. Each major group is on a mission to recruit new students into their dream group as they aspire to change america through innovation..... The dream group that i will be representing is the Dream of Survival and Basic Needs. This group will try to turn America back to the time of the Native Americans in the wild where everyone lived for just the basics in life without the additions of technology, government, and money. Everyone's job will be to survive for themselves and to take care of their family.

  21. Some people would say that the internet is ruining America and that it has a negative impact on the way we live. However, others will argue that the internet gives us an incredible advantage. It has given today's generation many different ways to achieve the American Dream. If we play the cards right and utilize all of the opportunities we are given, we can truly make a difference in America and maybe even set a new example of the American dream. As we continue to grow older, so will the world that surrounds us. One can only imagine how the world will progress and it is certain that technology will be a huge part of the progression.

  22. I believe a good idea to present this topic would be to have a guest speaker. The speaker could either be someone famous or someone who is not but who is very successful and achieving the American Dream. The component of this guest speaker would add an important dynamic to our presentation by making the topic come to life. It would show the audience the American Dream in action by the realization of someone chasing it and living through it through modern times. Millions of Americans wish to achieve the American Dream, thereby attaining a better life for themselves and their families. I also believe that having a guest speaker would allow the audience some insight into the real world, as well as provide advice for those who wish to do the same.

  23. ABC's famous show Shark Tank gives entrepreneurs a shot at making their dreams come true. This show, which is based off the whole concept of chasing the American Dream, has taken the country by storm. A panel of billionaires and millionaires, or individuals who have already succeeded in their business ventures and have already achieved the American Dream, have come together to help others do the same. This panel hears business ideas and inventions from small town, unsuccessful entrepreneurs and is willing to invest their hard earned money into the product, if they like it, to help them become successful and make money. This show provides a great opportunity for all Americans who have ideas, but just need a little help to get themselves well-known. While presenting our topic to the class, we can discuss this show to provide a modern example of the American Dream in today's society. This will show our audience that everyone has a chance to be successful. Maybe, we can even present our topic like an episode of the show and hear ideas from the audience and invest fake money into the ideas we like.

  24. While presenting our topic, we can include some famous people that are already living the Dream and discuss the steps they took to achieve this success. One example of a person we can discuss is the prominent John D. Rockefeller. Rockefeller is American's first business superstar because of the immense wealth he earned since living in poverty throughout his childhood. He entered the oil business with his brother, starting the company known as Standard Oil. Due to its monopoly on oil refining and distribution of the nation, the company was able to become the United States most successful business. He started his own business from nothing as has left a last legacy on our country that is still felt today. His company became so large, that even after his death, he is still able to provide for his future family members. Another example would be the renowned Oprah Winfrey. As a child, Winfrey suffered terrible hardships, such as divorced parents and poverty. In high school, she took a class that trained her in broad cast and media, starting her career path as one of the most successful tv personalities. Eventually, she had her own talk show and then her own network. She has established herself to be an actor, an author, a magazine publisher, theater producer, and philanthropist as well. Over all, Oprah is worth $3 billion because of her business pursuits. These are just two examples of dreamers we can discuss in our presentation. There are so many others like Rockefeller and Oprah who have established themselves as wealthy Americans on their own merit and hard work.

  25. Authors and directors have been using the concept of the American Dream as the basis for their works. Authors have written novels in which characters have an inherit desire to achieve success and make a living. The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald's most famous novel, was written about a man who was poor from birth who established success on his own. Gatsby, the protagonist of the work, did whatever it took to become wealthy in order that he could pursue his one true love. Gatsby had the whole vision for the perfect American Dream: the money, the nice cars, the big house, the beautiful girl, and hopefully a wonderful family. However, through the many twists and turns of the novel, he fails and never achieves the culmination of his vision. Another example would be Arthur Miller's play, Death of a Salesman. Through this play, a hard working American man named Willy is determined to make enough money to support his family. Although he worked hard, he also had some character flaws that prevented him from attaining the wealth he wished for. An example of a movie that portrays the same storyline would be The Wold of Wall Street, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio. These two helped to create a film that demonstrated the epitome of the American Dream. A poor stock broker on Wall Street established everyone's wildest dreams by becoming one of the most successful businessmen to ever walk the earth. Jordan Belfort, played by DiCaprio, establishes his own small business that grows and grows into an extremely successful corporation making billions of dollars. Each of these works all have one common motive from each of the main characters, success attain through the American Dream. In our presentation, we could further discuss the plot and storyline of each of these stories as well as discuss the characterization of each work. Along with our audience, we can discuss what each character did right and wrong and explain what they could have done instead to help themselves be more successful. We can also show a clip that would be relevant to the presentation concerning on if the works, or we can act out a scene that would enchants our overall presentation.
