  2. Topic:
Okay so guys we decided that our topic will be how the “Righteous Man,” from Genesis, the “Gentleman,” from the Analects, and the “Illumined Man,” from Bhagavad Gita all deviate from western values.

    Layout:
We are going to use a dating game show to display the qualities and beliefs of each man compared to the “Western Man.” We are going to use 4 people to be the four different types of men and have another person be the host. For that last person we will continue to discuss what his job will be but as of now he will be a co host with witty things to say and emphasis the material being used.

    Jobs:

Joe and Vin gain information about the “Righteous Man”

Galford and Scogs gain information about “Gentleman”

Kevin and Sean gain information about “Illumined Man

Everyone must create a list of Western Values and gain information on this

    Positions:

Joe- Against your will you are the girl (Western Values) :)

    Scogs- Gentleman

    Sean- Illumined Man

    Galford- Righteous Man

    Vin- Host

    Kevin- Co host

Please at any time add what you think we should do, or modify to make our project better. In class we agreed on this layout, however, we are all part of this project so we all have a say and all ideas will be looked at and discussed in class. Lets try and make this fun instead of just an assignment. Let’s continue to work so we can put this draft into stone. Also lets make it funny so were not “boring” - Mrs. Fotniatos, but still with a good point.

    1. We need to make sure everyone is well rehearsed on their topic and we should make like write down all the information we can find on our people either write it on the blog or in class and make sure we all have an idea of each other so if we get stuck we can help each other out

    2. Guys could our research also come from something in the textbook. I'm trying to find a new piece of research for the righteous man, but its giving me only New Testament stuff. At least in the textbook we have some examples from the time period that we're going after.

      Delete
    3. You still need two outside pieces of researched information I thought for your works cited.

      Delete
    4. I don't think we should do a word for word script, like the group that went today. we should put the info on little cards that we can read from while also not sounding like robots, reading off a script.

      Delete
    5. Absolutely because then it becomes dull if we just use a script.

      Delete
    6. Sorry guys I was at work but definitely not off a script, we should be organized but not be so direct have a little fun with it so we should talk almost in improv with a little info just in case.

  3. Ok so I know you guys are probably going to hate this but just hear me out. What if instead of me being a girl, I am a guy of homosexual orientation. we make like a blind game show where the three men don't know who they are really asking. It will still be funny while also displaying Western societies views of the acceptance of same sex relationships. Just let me know what you guys think, I probably already know what the answer is going to be though.

    1. It has a good concept even though it is a little weird but I don't feel like the Western values include same sex relationship completely, there is stilt a large amount of prejudice against them. According to the chart and data recorded by Jessica Walthall, although 54% of Americans overall favor it, 38% oppose it so that wouldn't be an accepted western value. Even though I do like the concept and I know you don't want to be the girl but the West still doesn't have as munch acceptance of them that we can use.

    2. Sean is right while it is a good concept and does make sense homosexuality still isn't fully accepted in the western world. Homosexual marriage still isn't legalized across the country and gay people are still discriminated against in many different social situations. I also feel that this topic would be a little weird to do in class.

      Delete
    3. I agree with sean and mike that homosexualality is not really fully excepted in the culture and we would have a hard time explaining it through the presentation. I am kinda concernced on why you don't want to be the girl but a gay guy is fine.

  4. Guys, I found this article with info on the righteous man, I think could be helpful. The title is literally how Jesus describes the righteous man. It starts out with a bible passage from Matthew, saying how Jesus is the center of everything and of everybody. This is mostly because of all that he has given to us, and how much he has sacrificed for us. It then takes a look at the passage and describes how Jesus describes the "righteous" man based on the passage. It literally goes through almost every aspect of a person's life, from how this person should live, to how he should carry himself in public. Here is the link if anyone wants to read it and point out anything I may have missed.

    1. Joe I didn't read it but the only problem I have with that is the righteous man we were talking about in class was before Jesus. It was strictly a Genesis version of the righteous not Jesus's view of it. So I don't think it's the same.

      Delete
    2. Sean, while I still believe that because Jesus is the Son of God, therefore had the same ideals for the righteous man. I'll look for something that's in the Old Testament too.

      Delete
    3. Yea I was thinking the same thing actually, Sean. However, its still outside information on what the righteous man i, so maybe you can use it. Just try not to relate it too Jesus too much and try and direct it towards God.

      Delete
    4. I never thought i would say this but i kinda agree with Joe on this one, i think it will benefit us in the class if we add Jesus in it, its a good way to waste time.

      Delete
    5. My only problem was the time period of the righteous man that was in genesis and Jesus' time was different and I remember Mrs. Fotinatos saying that it is strictly Old Testament for that so Jesus isn't around but if you guys think we should then let's go for it

  5. Ok guys I think I have an idea for our powerpoint.
Our first slide will be the title of the show.
The next three slides will be describing each of the three men. Each slide should have a general description of the type of "good man", that's coming out.
Since we re going to have three rounds I think that the next three slides should be the three questions or segments. So if its a question we just have type question up there or if its a segment we have the title of the segment.
Let me know what you guys think, feel free to make any changes to the set up. I think we said Vin was making the power point so make it as creative as you can.

    1. I was thinking having the first slide be our thesis statement. Nick and myself, "Co-hosts", will explain the thesis, than begin our show. I'm thinking after that to just have an individual slide that just says "The Gentleman": "The Righteous Man" etc. Nick and myself were than going to explain each man. Unless like you said, just have a couple bullet points almost explaining it. Any thoughts guys?

      Delete
    2. I like that idea vin of you and nick explaining each man because you guys are funny and I think you guys would do a good job with that. I also think that it works too because you two are doing research so you'll know what you're talking about. I also think its better to have the hosts talk to the class instead of them just reading what's written on a slide, its a little more interactive.

      Delete
    3. Have those index cards Vin and Nick with information on each person so when you tell them to come on down, you explain what they are like, characteristics, and etc. Along those lines may be a good idea.

      Delete
    4. And we can do little bullet points underneath each person's name if you would like, BUT NOT TOO MUCH BECAUSE WE CANT DISTRACT THE AUDIENCE!

      Delete
    5. Definitely agreeing with Dray and Vin on this one if anything maybe one or two short descriptions but the host should describe it so it's not too much reading it's listening, it's interactive a little more fun and can bring more life to it.

  6. Ok guys here are my ideas for what the three rounds should be.
The first two we ask a type of question. So the first question could be, "If we were on a date where would you take me?" The second question could be, "What are dreams do you have in life?" The last round, and I think we agreed on doing this, could be like a speed dating round, like the girl just takes a few minutes and they like play out a date, just to see what happens. Let me know what you guys think and say what we should change.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I completely agree on the plans for your three rounds, and I actually like the questions you suggested. The speed dating I think we should have planned out, so we know what questions Kevin (the new contestant, lucky Joe) is going to ask. Unless we make it interesting and let Kevin come up with questions for you guys and you don't know. I was also thinking for this round to do something similar to Family Feud during the speed money round (I think that is what it is called, it is the part at the end). So lets just say the first part of the speed dating is Kevin and Galford, you and Sean can stand in the back "pretending" like you can't hear his questions so you don't know what to expect. But again, I like your questions.

      Delete
    2. Yea I actually agree with you Vin about Kevin making up the questions for the speed dating round. I think it would make it more interesting and for the answers we have to give, we could just go off of the research that we have all collected for the type of "good man" we are acting as. But I think its going to have to be like a quick segment depending on how much time we left for the presentation. Remember we still have to conclude the show and make our concluding statement. But I do like the Family Feud idea.

      Delete
    3. With the concluding statement, should we do it after the show, meaning "not in character" or do it at the end of the show, "in character." Sounds a little confusing but I hope you get what I'm trying ton say. This goes out to everyone. I think if we do it in character, there could be a little humor into it, like you gues arguing why didn't she pick me etc. But if we do it out of character, it would obviously be more serious. Either way, we of course have to be very informative about the reason, just a matter of fact if we make it humorous, not the bone in your arm, or serious. Please let me know what you think about that. Thanks guys.

      Delete
    4. I like this idea and I really like the family feud idea to it I think that will make it a lot more fun. I think you're right too vin we should stick to the research on our characters but still improvise some lines to keep it fun and interesting so we aren't just droning on. I was thinking about the righteous man character that I'm doing and I was thinking he would be a very satirical character more so than the others because of his unrelenting devotion to God, what do you guys think?

      Delete
    5. I agree, this could be one of the reasons why Kevin doesn't pick you. It's also a great point that can possibly be thrown in during the concluding statements.

      Delete
    6. Should I try choosing someone and then get denied by everyone ? After each denial, the guys can explain their reason why they are out and then that concluding statement can come in right after all of that.

      Delete
    7. Galford that sounds like a good idea too.

  7. I found another article I think would b better for the righteous man. It's an article that explains the attributes of a righteous man. Only difference this time, instead of it being through the words of Jesus, this time it is based on the word of God. It goes through the entire bible and says how God calls us to live. It talks about the attributes we should have to be righteous, and show us the areas where we are lacking. (Parker) Plus following each of the characteristics mentioned, it then provides bible verses where that characteristic is being shown. Some of the verses are New Testament, but I feel they still portray the same message. I'll post the link for you guys and tell me what you think.

    1. I like that article. I like the explanations given under the quotes. Those are lines that the co-host can use when introducing the man, the righteous man in this case, and also contains info that the righteous man himself can use when answering a question.

      Delete
    2. I think this is a good idea because even though we read a genesis portrayal on the righteous man it would be smart to look at another version of it just to see what the differences are, because if they aren't that different it gives us more research to use which will help us so we don't run out of things to say during the presentation and have any awkward silences.

      Delete
  8. I am just going to post a quick outline of what I think the PowerPoint should look like. Please tell me if I should add, delete, or move something around. Thanks guys.

Slide 1- Thesis (Co-hosts than explain before our "show" begins)
Slide 2- The Gentleman (he will be the first one introduced, tell me a good song for intro)
Slide 3- The Righteous Man (Again, tell me a song for intro)
Slide 4- The Illumined Man (Song for intro)
Slide 5- The Western Woman (Sorry Kevin, we already agreed to Barbie Girl, and your name is MiKayla, inside joke )
    Slide 6- Round One
Slide 7- Question for round 1 (the co-hosts will explain answers to elaborate, this goes for the first 2 rounds)
    Slide 8- Round 2
    Slide 9- Question
    Slide 10- Speed dating
Slide 11- And the Winner Is.......

Fortunately for the three men they are not picked, unfortunately for the co-hosts, its one of us. Choose wisely Kevin. Again, tell me what you think

    1. I think this is good set up and a smart set up because the three characters are going to be introduced and explained before you meet the western woman. how exactly do the rounds play out though is it the western woman asking the three guys questions about themselves or is it the three men individually asking her (kevin) questions.

      Delete
    2. it is a smart set up because it was my idea, Haha. Seriously now, I think we are going to make Kevin ask the men the questions because he is the one looking for the date. The men are just lucky to be there if you get what I'm saying. before our show actually begins, the men could ask kevin a couple of questions. Also before we begin, Nick and myself are going to be asking you guys questions like "What do you want to see in this lucky contestant." If you guys ant to ask Kevin questions in the beginning we will give you guys the opportunity to do so. We are trying to get as much info out as we can, while also entertaining the class and give them a good showing.

      Delete
    3. Kind of am introduction and meeting of everyone. However, I think the first round sound be the host asking questions and second round me asking questions. There should be a few questions in each round though. Speeding fating will be up to me for the questions.

    4. That sounds good but who is going to introduce who in the beginning? Ill get the woman and gentleman, while you get the illumined dude and the righteous guy. (Caldiero)

    5. Ok, I was just going to double check that. Nick, when you make your index cards, put the name of the show/group on the back. I'm stapling the index card to a piece of construction paper to make it look as close to a game show as possible.

    1. Does anyone think we should bring in props ? I feel maybe it's too much to deal with since I feel we still have a lot of work to do.

  13. Alright guys, its about to get real, I found an article that explains the gentleman. It states that he is a kind of scholar, faithful to others, sincere in deeds, and never giving up in his efforts of self-cultivation. They go on to say how earthly gains have little place here. There are also 2 quotes from the Analects but i'm to lazy to write them here so you guys are going to have to go to the website that i presented in my awesome MLA thing. ;)

The Co-Hosts are going to explain the thesis before the show starts, so we are going to be serious when we explain that to get our point across, and everyone knows what we are talking about. But after that, the show is going to begin. I think we should start like that. You agree?

  22. So I found some research on the illumined man, the illumined man has no emotions, he is virtually detached from the world in mind and body. He renounces all of his selfish desires, he knows the truth of life. The lord is not seperate of him. Never blames nor praises anyone else for his is dependent on no one. He truly achieves evolution. Because of how the illumined is described and the way the western woman is the differences will be very straight forward not much complexity. Like how the western woman is all involved, the illumined man is just detached.

    1. This is perfect Sean! This is a great way to explain what the Illumined man is !

  23. Okay! So the long awaited research of the Illumined Man has arrived! After reading the Bhagavad Gita in the textbook I feel I have a better grip on "Illumined Man." The best line that I feel describes him is ", not shaken by adversity, not hankering after happiness: Free from fear, free anger, free from things of desire. I call him seer, and illumined. The bonds of flesh are broken. He is lucky, and does not rejoice: He is unlucky, and does not weep. I call him illumined.” I know this is a long quote but I just wanted to show you guys what he is like in a way. This quote describes how he is emotionless, not bonded by his body, without desire of any sort, and forever eternal. The Illumined Man also really sticks to the Hinduism tradition of Atman, Brahman, and Karma Yoga as discussed by Sarter Barbara. Atman is the universal soul, source of all individual souls and likewise Brahman is the oversoul of which each individual’s Atman is a part. Karma Yoga is broken down into three yoga’s of devotion, work without desire, and knowledge of the ultimate truth. All these traditions fit into the Illumined to be self-surrendering, selfless and unchangeable. Eknath Easwaran shows how the Illumined Man is self-realizing of reincarnation and that “the basic nature is not subject to time and death, yet reminds him that he cannot realize the truth if he cannot see beyond the dualities of life: pleasure and pain, success and failure, and even heat and cold.” The Illumined man sees beyond all types of pleasures and follows the right path.

  24. I found good research on the gentleman in one article that talks about many different points on being a gentleman. The article talks about goodness and says that when at home a youth should behave to his parents and when abroad behave towards his elders. It also says that he should be truthful and be overflowing with love to all and cultivate the friendship of the good. Confucius also says how there is no need for excessive possessions that we don't need and how riches and honors acquired by unrighteousness are like a passing cloud. It talks about how being good to others and treating others with respect is most important. Another article I found says how the gentleman is "one who follows the way and acts according to a system of morals and beliefs that are not common amongst other individuals".
