Christina, Greta. "The Top 10 Reasons I Don't Believe in God." Alternet. AlterNet, 30 Mar. 2012. Web. 04 May 2015.
This link is from a website that is presenting a simple 10 reasons why god does not exist. Personally, i believe that there is a higher being out there, but for the sake of the presentation i believe we can use some of the points presented in this article for our project. This quote is taken from the concluding statement in the article and i think that it can be used to help the arguement of the atheist side be more concrete and powerful, "It is not up to atheists to prove that God does not exist. It is up to believers to prove that he does. And in the absence of any good, solid evidence or arguments in favor of God's existence -- and in the presence of a whole lot of solid arguments against it -- I will continue to be an atheist."(Greta). This idea is good for our arguement because it will serve as a powerful and attention catching transition into a point of why god does exist, from the opposing side.
I believe this view is very ignorant of atheists "it is not up to atheists to prove that God does not exist, it is up to believers to prove that he does and in the absence of any good, solid evidence or arguments in favor of Gods existence and in the presence of a whole lot of solid arguments against it, I will continue to ba an atheist." The whole system of faith should not be something that you blindly follow. You should not wait for somebody else to find the evidence to sell you on religion. If you want to find out you need to do your own research, and find your own evidence, because that's the ou way you'll ever truly know for yourself if you believe or not. And I believe if every person did their own investigation into faith and religion, they would find that there is a greater power at work.
Howell, Elizabeth. "What Is the Big Bang Theory? | Space.com." Space.com. N.p., 19 Mar. 2014. Web. 04 May 2015.
I would like the group to read this article and include some of the points that are made within our powerpoint presentation. The definition in the first paragraph of what the "Big Bang Theory" is would be a good opener or text in a slide. Especially the arguement about how long the earth has existed and its age. Atheists and Theists(idk?) both have extremely different viewpoints about how long the earth has existed. Time is a very good topic for a slide in the power point.
I agree with you, time would be the best way to start it because we are trying to prove we evolved and evolution started a long, long time ago. Finding out the timing can help you put two and two together, the science nowadays proves that evolution is a fact not a theory. Religion stays faithful and not factual so it can't be trusted, I feel people choose to believe in him because they need someone or something to cry to when they're unhappy.
As Anthony stated from his research, there is an explanation to the timing the earth was created. Genesis states that the earth is 6000 years old and that the earth was created in 6 days. But when the world was created there was no concept of time like we currently know it. Just because currently one day means 24 hours, doesn't mean God was running a clock when the world was created. Evolution very well could have started a long time ago, but the actual number of time can't be known the way we currently view it.
Mike, as a believer in religion and science I fully believe in evolution. The Big Bang happened. But I believe there was a higher power that started the Big Bang. How else would you create something out of nothing. And the only way that region is not factual is if you don't take the time to do research yourself and you blindly believe in it without any understanding of it.
Hello my fellow Fresher than Febreezers I want to start doing some research on why God doesn't exist, I'm going to use evolution as my reasoning. Its the proof that humans were formed by animals and not God. I shall also research the fact that Jesus has no proven record of actually being here and how bogus it all is.
Evolution is another strong argument against God's creation because it disproves much of the idea about Adam and Eve. From our point of view as atheists, we do not believe humans were just created as God's "Chosen People", we believe that humans evolved from other mammals and with me being Richard Dawkins, i believe in the Genetic Evolution. Your second point about Jesus never existing is moot. There is proven historical evidence of Jesus living, but no proof that he was resurrected or born without 2 people having sex.
Through my research I have found evidence that shows that evolution does in some way have to do with science. But religion and God also play a major role. I believe wholeheartedly that natural selection and mutation are the reasons we have the current species we do now. But I also believe that God is the reason this happened. It was all his plan.
Character Role | Tim Name: Richard Dawkins Background: Richard Dawkins was born on the 26th of March, 1951 in Nairobi, Kenya. He is an evolutionary biologist who believes in genes as the driving force of evolution and has generated controversy with his enthusiastic view of atheism. He got a degree in Zoology at the Balliol College, University of Oxford in 1962. He went on to write books advocating evolution and promoting the idea of Atheism and god being a hoax. Specific Beliefs: Richard Dawkins is an atheist, but also a scientist. He believes in genetic evolution , the passing down of favorable heritable traits over long periods of time from generation to generation. When it comes to creation, Dawkins believes that the earth was formed long ago and developed into its current state.
Richard Dawkins is a great scientist, and I have had many conversations with him over religion and science. His problem is that he is close minded, which can be dangerous for a scientist. Why would you want to believe that there is no other alternative out there than the single viewpoint that you have? How can you prove there is no God? You can't. Nobody denies that genetic evolution happened, but I believe that was due to a non-natural force. Nobody denies something like that Big Bang happened, but how did it happen. There has to be an explanation by a higher power than us when something is created out of nothing.
A respectable scientists but a bit narrow minded in his studies. Of course an evolutionist would argue the validity of the Genesis story. On the other hand a theologist looks at the science and the faith to make a valid interpretation of the bible that relates to scientific fact. Denouncing the Bible is rejecting God like Richard, that definitely earns you the title of an atheist. Not everything always needs to be proven its almost something that u feel having God in your life. Its almost like your personal physiologist. But it you beed scientific fact to prove everything look at my other blogs and the correlation between Genesis and science. ARainero
Character Role | Mike Name: Mike Newman Background: I was born on the 21st of August, 1997 in Manhattan, New York. I was once a Catholic who used to attend church every weekend for CCD credits that turned atheist. My whole family is Catholic except for me and one of my older brothers, we see religion for what it really is. I attend Monsignor Farrell which is a catholic school but the only reason I came was because of its great reputation as a school and its wrestling team. Specific Beliefs: It wasn't until I was able to actually understand what they were trying to teach us in religion and it hit me one day that its all bogus. I think why are there 100 religions, what makes catholicism different from any other because they're all faiths that have somewhat "proof." Meanwhile scientists proved the theory of evolution and that the big bang is what set the animals in motion. God did not create everything in 7 days that's just a fairy tale, humans came about over time from monkeys.
I think maybe your viewpoint on religion was hurt due to you feeling you were forced to follow religion. Religion is different for everybody. I don't believe we are just give a faith and should blindly believe it. I believe faith is something that you learn over a lifetime, through all your experiences. Nobody should blindly believe in it, but you should give it a chance, and give yourself a chance to form your own beliefs. There was no measure of time when the world was created. The 7 days of creation could very well have been different stages in the earth begining. There are so many different religions because people have done their own research into faith and have come to their own conclusions. Atheism promoted and ignorant belief that there is nothing.
i feel that the fact you were almost forced into religion is the reason why you have trouble believing it today. Faith shouldn't be something forced upon you, faith is something that you come to believe from your own experiences. Like Francis Collins, he was born and raised workout the influence of religion. Later on in his life he came to realize that religion is the the way to explain the unsolved phanominons of the world. ARainero
Bertka, Connie, and Jim Miller. "Science, Religion, Evolution and Creationism: Primer." Science, Religion, Evolution and Creationism: Primer.(Italicized) Human Origins Initiative. Web. 5 May 2015.
In this source the Human Origins Initiative co-chairs talk about creation, big bang, and evolution. They explain people with different viewpoints such as evolution is real and that God set it into motion or God made us and we didn't evolve, etc. This is the faith aspect that just completely ignores the facts of science and clings hopelessly to their faith. "It is broadly agreed that the various characteristics that distinguish our species did not emerge all at once. Walking on two legs emerged before making stone tools, and both of these occurred well before the biggest increase in human brain size (Human Origins Initiative)." These are scientific facts expressing that we did not emerge at once so that already shoots down God, I'm sure he wouldn't go out of his way to wait for us to evolve. He would've just made us right away if we were "his chosen people."
I'd like to also state that when the church first came about it was so corrupt, the holy people used it as a way to extort money from people or have people bend to their will. But then they would say "don't worry its for God" and the poor people would cling to God because they had nothing else going for them. The symbol of God was much more respected back then and there's less and less religious people in the world. Many people are opening there eyes now but I can guarantee you if kids weren't raised into a faith they wouldn't follow it with all of the scientific proof there is now.
It is fact that the church was corrupt a long time ago. This is a good point that can be used in our debate. We need to get more quotes from Collins' Language of God and have some statements based from the texts that we were reading. I agree that God is less respected nowadays and that if our faith was not forced upon us, there would be more free thinkers. As i said in my recent post "It is not up to atheists to prove that God does not exist. It is up to believers to prove that he does." Although scientists are almost indirectly disproving the ideas of creation by God, until i see solid proof that God exists, i cannot fully believe in him.
It's an invalid argument to say that the Catholic Church was once corrupt therfore God isn't real. Yes, i am sure back in Medieval and Renaissance time periods the church was corrupt. Back in those days the church wasn't the only thing that was corrupt. From our perspective today we look at the history of the church in a negative way. However that was the way thing went in that time period. No institution would be able to prevail so long if it wasn't as savy as its time. Today the pooe is one of the most influential people in the world and there is a reason monarchs rose and fell bit the church prevailed. ARainero
To Rainero and Giannone, please dont forget to come up with the 3 Question survey and print 20 or so copies of it. This will be a good use of our time in the presentation and will help us to see the views of our classmates and how our presentation may or may not have affected them. (just a reminder). I am going to sleep in about 30 minutes and there are no blogs posted for me to give feedback on.
Hello, my name is Chris Gale and i was born and raised in Greenville, Tennessee by a traditional Christian family. I attended Catholic school my entire life, was an alter server in my childhood, and attended mass every Sunday. The presence of God in my life truly shaped who i am today. However, raising a Christian family in 2015 isnt the way it used to be back when i was in school. When i was in school i learned all about scientific philosophy but not to the extent where it intervened with the teachings of the Bible. Men do not have an argument against the word of the Holy Spirit. The scriptures teach man that God created the heavens and the earth in 7 days. That we are all descendants of Adam and Eve. That is all fact! Contrary to the influence of the devil over man spreading propaganda that the universe was created by "The Big Bang" and that man came from the children of monkey's. These new teachings stray people away from the good of God but towards the hands of the devil. Mans opinion does not trump God. ARainero
Though i see your character to be somewhat opinionated, this is good. It would be beneficial for you to research some common viewpoints of devout Christians and look up good debate points so that you will have a concrete knowledge of what to say when an evolutionist or scientist (atheist) makes a point. Good luck.
My name is Francis Collins. I am a physician-geneticist noted for my landmark discoveries of disease genes, and visionary leadership of the Human Genome Project , and the former director of the National Human Genome Research Institute. I have served as the National Human Genome Research Institutes director since 1993. I led the National Human Genome Project to completion.
I, Mike Newman would like to have an interview with you tomorrow and ask you some questions on your scientific background along with your insight on religion. Be ready to open up your mind and share your thoughts with us Francis.
evidenceforchristianity.org Oakes, John, Mr. "Evidence for Christianity." Evidence for Christianity. John Oakes, 26 Apr. 2013. Web. 06 May 2015. The fact is that we will certainly never find proof that Adam and Eve were actual historical people. We do not have scientific proof of their existence but we have the bible as our evidence. People are very quick to conclude that we are all the decedents from Africa. The Out of Africa theory states that all of mankind come from the same reign and over time migrated to different parts of the world and evolved. It is scientifically proven that somewhere down the line we all match a common ancestor. In order for evolution to work their must be mutations that benefit a species some type of way and carry on through future generations. Now, just north-east of Africa is Mesopotamia where the Garden of Eden is located. So technically for a species to be successful it must carry on all the same traits to future generations and both parents must have %100 dominance of those traits. So Adam and Eve were the first "people" to mate with both 100% dominant and identical characteristics of a human resulting in generations which passed down the same traits. The first walks of man. ARainero
This is impressive, I would've never began to think the Garden of Eden was located on earth. But I see the sense in what you're trying to say and this is a good theory, it would only make sense that Adam and Eve mated to start humanity from a Christian point of view. And mutations happen all the time but humans are so complex that we can't be evolved through mutations, we just get screwed up in the formation process. Supposedly in Genesis God made sure he protected the Garden of Eden with a sword in the middle but there's been no record of that. There's no need to argue now there's another time for that but this is a great contribution to your argument.
In the Genesis, the creation story takes place on earth and has always taken place on earth. Where else would man live besides the earth? Mutations is what starts evolution. A mutation cab either be good or bad. If the mutation was bad then that branch would die out, if that mutaion is good then over time a species will be form witg those mutations as a dominant trait. "1. Scientific beliefs will have some evidence behind them. This is not true of many religious claims (the trinity, transubstantiation, etc.)." What is being said here is that scientists prove facts about the world and how it came to be but religions have no actual proof that their God(s) made the world.
"2. Scientific beliefs often issue correct predictions, and thus become confirmed and reconfirmed. No religion has achieved comparable success." This is basically what was just said, how scientists are able to back up their point and religions cannot.
"3. [Worrall] Scientific beliefs are usually testable. But religion regularly posits things that we cannot test for (e.g., souls, heaven)" This here is saying that scientists could try to figure anything out and could if they gathered what they needed but it's a little hard to do that with things that are nonexistent.
http://www.bethinking.org/ Coulter, Paul, Dr. "Bethinking.org." Bethinking.org. Paul Eddy, 2013 July 2013. Web. 06 May 2015. This research helps explain to us how the genesis can be modernly interpreted to have accuracy. Specifically the creation of the heavens and the earth. Recent examination says that the earth is now approximately 13.8 billion years old. The geneses estimate the earth is 6000 years old. However the genesis doesn’t say how long the days are. In the creation of the earth there was no concept of time because time wasn’t even created yet. Instead of looking at the creation story as 6 days long look at it in 6 phases categorized as days. The first day was light, the big bang, the explosion of mass creating the universe. The second day waters, the gasses in the universe combine and form liquid. The third day the ground, solid masses fused together creating somewhat spherical planets. The fourth day the sky, an ozone forms around the planets . The fifth day was creatures, the first forms of life start to form on earth perfect environment. The sixth day was humans, we came about from the environment God gave us in our time appoimately BC..100,000. So instead of seeing the creation story as Days look at it like 6 phases, the phases of the creation of the universe. ARainero
I completely agree with you. I believe that the creation of earth was indeed an act of God, how else would there be something out of nothing. This theory is very plausible and justified. I actually used some of the same reasoning in my own research.
"I believe God did intend, in giving us intelligence, to give us the opportunity to investigate and appreciate the wonders of His creation. He is not threatened by our scientific adventures." Francis Collins shows us that he believes God supports science. God gave us the foundation of knowledge as humans to continue making scientific breakthrough and discover more about the world.

This will be a good use of our time in the presentation and will help us to see the views of our classmates and how our presentation may or may not have affected them. (just a reminder). I am going to sleep in about 30 minutes and there are no blogs posted for me to give feedback on.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget to make the questions for your character and have answers for each of them that can be used in the panel debate.

Though i see your character to be somewhat opinionated, this is good. It would be beneficial for you to research some common viewpoints of devout Christians and look up good debate points so that you will have a concrete knowledge of what to say when an evolutionist or scientist (atheist) makes a point. Good luck.

DeleteIn the Genesis, the creation story takes place on earth and has always taken place on earth. Where else would man live besides the earth? Mutations is what starts evolution. A mutation cab either be good or bad. If the mutation was bad then that branch would die out, if that mutaion is good then over time a species will be form witg those mutations as a dominant trait.

"1. Scientific beliefs will have some evidence behind
them. This is not true of many religious claims (the
trinity, transubstantiation, etc.)."
What is being said here is that scientists prove facts about the world and how it came to be but religions have no actual proof that their God(s) made the world.
"2. Scientific beliefs often issue correct predictions, and
thus become confirmed and reconfirmed. No religion
has achieved comparable success."
This is basically what was just said, how scientists are able to back up their point and religions cannot.
"3. [Worrall] Scientific beliefs are usually testable. But
religion regularly posits things that we cannot test for
(e.g., souls, heaven)"
This here is saying that scientists could try to figure anything out and could if they gathered what they needed but it's a little hard to do that with things that are nonexistent.

He is not threatened by our scientific adventures."
Francis Collins shows us that he believes God supports science. God gave us the foundation of knowledge as humans to continue making scientific breakthrough and discover more about the world.
